The reviews I read about “Girls” were incredibly mixed. On the
positive end of the spectrum, many people felt that it was refreshing and
realistic. They compared it to “Sex and the City”, revealing the authentic differences
in women’s physiques and sex lives. Some, however, felt that the show only
depicted a specific type of woman, the young, privileged white girls.
I had a pretty positive reaction to the show. It incredible
to see the women on screen depicted not as glamorous or perfect, but shockingly
normal. Their problems were also extremely relatable. Most people go through a
transition in their lives between “girl” and “woman” or “boy” and “man”,
feeling not quite sure about which category they fall into. This is the central
to the story and is experienced by all groups of people, whether privileged
white girl or otherwise.
